How to inspect a used car before buying
A practical 30-point walk-around that catches most problems before you hand over your money.
Start with the paperwork
- Match the VIN on the car, logbook and documents
- Check service history stamps and intervals
- Check the mileage makes sense with the history
- Check the MOT/inspection record and any advisories
The walk-around
- Panel gaps and paint shade between panels (crash repair?)
- Rust at sills, arches and under the car
- Tires: tread, wear pattern and age (DOT date)
- All lights: head, indicator, brake, reverse, fog
- Windows and wipers: cracks, streaks, condition
Under the hood
- Oil level and color — milky means coolant in the oil
- Coolant level and color — oily means trouble
- Look for leaks under the engine
- Belt condition and battery age
- Start cold and listen for rattles or knocks
The test drive
- Clutch, gears and brakes feel
- Steering: straight, no wander or vibration
- Suspension: no clunks over bumps
- Engine: smooth idle, no smoke
- At temperature: check the temperature gauge and fans
