How to measure correctly

Fill the tank completely, reset the odometer, drive normally, then fill again to the same level. Consumption = fuel added ÷ distance × 100.

  • L/100 km = fuel(L) ÷ distance(km) × 100
  • MPG = distance(miles) × 4.546 ÷ litres (imperial)
  • City traffic, cold starts and short trips raise consumption
  • Correct tyre pressure and a clean air filter help

FAQ

For a modern compact car, 5–7 L/100 km on the motorway is excellent, 7–9 in town is normal. A diesel often beats a petrol in highway economy.
Check: tire pressure, winter tires, loaded roof box, dirty air filter, faulty oxygen sensor, dragging brake, or the way you drive. Also a leaking fuel system.
