Coding tells a control unit how it should behave in this specific vehicle: options, market, transmission type, tyre size and more. Adaption teaches learned values such as throttle position, injector correction, battery registration or gearbox adaptions.
A perfectly healthy component will misbehave if it is not coded or adapted correctly. This is why a scan tool that can read codes is not necessarily one that can finish the job — the replacement part must be introduced to the vehicle.
