CAN is not the only network. LIN is a single-wire, low-speed bus used for simple devices such as mirror and seat controls. FlexRay is a fast, deterministic, time-triggered bus used for safety-related systems. Automotive Ethernet carries high-bandwidth data such as camera and diagnostics traffic.
Each has its own physical layer and diagnostics. A fault on one bus affects only the modules on it, but the gateway can spread symptoms if it is involved. Diagnose the specific network a module uses rather than assuming CAN.
