What you will learn

  • Select the correct function and range
  • Connect the leads correctly for each measurement
  • Avoid the classic multimeter mistakes

A digital multimeter (DMM) is a voltage, current and resistance meter in one housing. Before every measurement, ask two questions: what quantity am I measuring, and is the circuit live? The answer decides the function, the range and how the leads are connected.

Measuring current by placing the leads across a supply (as for voltage) creates a short circuit. Always put the meter in series for current, and use the correct high-current socket.

Key points

  • Voltage in parallel, current in series, resistance isolated
  • Start on a range above the expected value
  • Never measure resistance on a live circuit
All values shown are training examples. Real thresholds depend on the manufacturer, engine, temperature and system — always confirm with the vehicle service documentation.
