A digital multimeter (DMM) is a voltage, current and resistance meter in one housing. Before every measurement, ask two questions: what quantity am I measuring, and is the circuit live? The answer decides the function, the range and how the leads are connected.
Measuring current by placing the leads across a supply (as for voltage) creates a short circuit. Always put the meter in series for current, and use the correct high-current socket.
