Using Freeze Frame
The snapshot of conditions when a fault was stored — the most underused diagnostic tool.

What you will learn
- Read freeze frame data
- Interpret the conditions
- Plan a reproduction test

When a fault is stored, many ECUs save a snapshot: engine speed, load, temperature, speed and other parameters at the instant the test failed. That snapshot is the closest thing to catching the fault in the act.
Use it to build a reproduction plan. If the misfire was stored at a specific load and temperature, run the engine there deliberately and watch live data. If the failure happened at cold start, reproduce a cold start.

Key points
- Freeze frame records the moment of failure
- Conditions help reproduce the fault
- Multiple frames exist on some systems
All values shown are training examples. Real thresholds depend on the manufacturer, engine, temperature and system — always confirm with the vehicle service documentation.
