The power–torque link

Power (kW) = torque (Nm) × RPM ÷ 9549. At the wheels, acceleration follows the torque curve; peak power tells you top-end potential.

  • 1 ch = 0.7355 kW
  • 1 hp (imperial) = 0.7457 kW
  • 1 Nm = 0.7376 lb-ft
  • Diesel engines make peak torque at low RPM; petrol at high RPM

FAQ

Diesel burns fuel over a longer period of the power stroke at high pressure, producing more torque at low RPM. That is why trucks are diesel.
