What it does
- Smooths the pulses of the power strokes
- Provides the clutch friction surface
- Dual-mass flywheels filter torsional vibration
When it fails
- Rattling from the bell housing at idle
- Clutch judder
- Vibration that changes with RPM
- Dual-mass flywheel noise that disappears off idle
How to diagnose
- Listen at idle in neutral
- Check for excessive flywheel movement
- Inspect when the clutch is apart
Maintenance
- Replace dual-mass flywheels with the clutch kit
- Use new bolts, torqued to spec
- Resurface or replace the friction surface
Use the diagnosis order. When a part fails, confirm each hypothesis with measurements before replacing anything — codes and symptoms overlap.
