Clutch Gearbox Driveshaft Differential

Tap a part to see how it fits in the system.

What it does

  • Splits torque between the two driven wheels
  • Allows the outer wheel to turn faster in corners
  • Multiplies torque through the final drive

When it fails

  • Whining from the axle at speed
  • Clunking when changing load
  • Oil leak from the axle housing
  • Vibration from the rear on RWD

How to diagnose

  1. Check the differential oil level
  2. Listen while driving in circles
  3. Check for play in the pinion and output flanges

Maintenance

  • Change the differential oil on schedule
  • Use the correct LSD friction additive if fitted
Use the diagnosis order. When a part fails, confirm each hypothesis with measurements before replacing anything — codes and symptoms overlap.
