Most modern cars use a monocoque (unibody) structure where the body panels and floor form the load-bearing structure. Older or heavy-duty vehicles use a separate chassis. In both cases the metal structure doubles as the return path for electrical current — the ground.
This is why a corroded body seam or a loose ground bolt can create faults that look like ECU failures.
