Modern vehicles no longer wire every switch to every load. Instead, control units share information over serial buses. The most common is CAN (Controller Area Network); LIN handles simple, cheap devices; FlexRay and Automotive Ethernet handle high-speed or safety-critical data.

Because modules share data, one failed module or a damaged bus can make several unrelated systems misbehave. When you see symptoms across systems that share nothing physical, suspect the network.

Typical OBD-II pins: CAN-High and CAN-Low are usually on pins 6 and 14 of the DLC, but this is vehicle dependent — always verify with the manufacturer data.
