The clutch transmits engine torque to the gearbox through friction. The flywheel and pressure plate clamp the friction disc against each other; pressing the pedal releases the clamp so the engine can idle while the wheels are still.
Wear reduces clamping force and friction. A worn clutch slips under load: engine speed rises without matching road speed, and a hot friction smell appears. If the clutch drags instead, it never fully releases and the gearbox grinds when selecting gears.
