A two-stroke engine completes intake, compression, power and exhaust in a single crankshaft revolution. Ports in the cylinder wall, opened and closed by the piston itself, replace much of the valvetrain. Because it produces a power stroke every revolution, a two-stroke makes good power for its size — but it is harder to control emissions and typically burns oil by design.
A four-stroke engine separates the four phases over two revolutions and uses valves driven by a camshaft. That gives better breathing, cleaner combustion and lower emissions, which is why virtually every modern car uses the four-stroke cycle.
