Introduction

A four-stroke engine fires its cylinders in a deliberate order so that the power strokes are spread evenly around the crankshaft. That order reduces vibration, smooths torque delivery, and lets the bearings share the load. Common four-cylinder orders include 1-3-4-2 and 1-2-4-3; the exact order is engine specific.

For any of this to work, the camshaft must be locked to the crankshaft. The camshaft turns at exactly half crankshaft speed so the valves open at the right moment in the cycle. The link is a timing belt, a timing chain or a gear train — and if that link slips even one tooth, valve timing moves.
