Pressing the pedal moves a piston in the master cylinder, which pushes brake fluid through lines to the calipers or wheel cylinders. Because liquids are essentially incompressible, the force is transmitted almost undiminished, and the hydraulic ratio multiplies it.
At the wheel, hydraulic pressure squeezes the pads against a rotating disc (or shoes against a drum). Friction converts motion into heat, which is why brakes glow and fade when abused. Air in the fluid, a seized caliper or worn pads all change pedal feel and stopping distance.
