Open-Circuit Voltage and State of Charge

Reading a rested battery voltage and understanding what it tells you — and what it does not.

What you will learn

  • Measure open-circuit voltage correctly on a rested battery
  • Interpret voltage against state of charge as a training guide
  • Explain why voltage alone cannot prove capacity

Test procedure

  1. Turn off all loads and let the battery rest so the surface charge dissipates.
  2. Select DC volts on the multimeter.
  3. Connect the black lead to the negative terminal and the red lead to the positive terminal.
  4. Read the voltage and compare it with the manufacturer guide for that battery technology.
Open-circuit voltageIndicative state of chargeTraining comment
~12.6 V or higherClose to fullTypical for a rested lead-acid battery
~12.4 VLowerRecharge and retest before condemning
~12.2 VLowInvestigate the discharge cause, do not just recharge
below ~11.9 VVery lowPossible deep discharge or internal fault
These bands are teaching aids for a conventional lead-acid battery at room temperature. AGM, EFB, gel and lithium systems, and different temperatures, change the interpretation. Always prefer the manufacturer data.

CASE 001 Battery Discharges Overnight Open case →

The engine cranks slowly in the morning. The customer reports the battery has been replaced twice and the problem returns within a week.

Key points

  • Let the battery rest and remove surface charge first
  • Voltage estimates charge, not health
  • Temperature affects the reading
All values shown are training examples. Real thresholds depend on the manufacturer, engine, temperature and system — always confirm with the vehicle service documentation.
