Vehicles use different refrigerants by age and market. R134a and the newer R1234yf are not interchangeable, and each system uses a specific oil (for example PAG oil matched to the refrigerant). Mixing refrigerants or oils causes poor performance and compressor damage.
R1234yf is mildly flammable under certain conditions, which is why recovery equipment and procedures differ. Always identify the refrigerant from the vehicle data, use the correct machine and follow the manufacturer instructions.
