The compressor is engaged by an electromagnetic clutch (or controlled internally on variable-displacement compressors). The climate module engages it only when conditions are safe: enough refrigerant pressure, acceptable temperatures and a valid request from the panel.
Protection is why an AC can refuse to engage rather than fail. A low-pressure switch prevents running with no refrigerant (which would starve the compressor of oil); a high-pressure switch prevents over-pressure. The first test for “no cold air” is therefore: is the clutch being commanded, and is a sensor blocking it?
