Reading the DOT date code
The last four digits of the DOT code are the date: the first two are the week (01-53) and the last two the year. Example 2319 = week 23 of 2019.
- Four digits since 2000
- Three digits before 2000
- The two letters before the date are the plant code
When to replace an old tire
Many manufacturers recommend replacing tires at 6 to 10 years regardless of tread, because rubber hardens and cracks with age. Heat, UV and under-inflation accelerate ageing. Inspect sidewalls and treat this as guidance, not a verdict.

On the tire sidewall, usually on one side only, just after the letters DOT. The last four digits are the date code.
It may be legal but is not recommended. Aged rubber loses grip and can fail. Have it inspected by a professional and replace if in doubt.
