Make Your Car Engine Last Longer: 5 Easy Checks
Simple checks that add years to your engine: clean the PCV valve, watch coolant pH, and more. These five habits take minutes but prevent costly damage.
The expert tip
- Replace the PCV valve every 30,000 miles or 3 years: a clogged valve builds crankcase pressure and pushes oil past seals.
- Test coolant pH yearly with a $5 strip; if below 7.5, flush and refill with a 50/50 mix to stop acid eating head gaskets.
- Inspect the air filter every 6,000 miles: hold it to light, and if you can't see through it, replace it to keep dirt out of the engine.
- Check the serpentine belt for cracks every 30,000 miles; a snapped belt stops the water pump and overheats the engine in minutes.
- Listen for pinging under load and switch to premium fuel if it persists: knock can crack pistons and costs far more than the fuel.
