The warning signs

  1. Squealing when braking (wear indicator)
  2. Grinding or scraping noise
  3. Soft or spongy brake pedal
  4. Pedal sinks to the floor
  5. Vibration or judder under braking
  6. Car pulls to one side
  7. Brake warning light on the dash
  8. Visible low fluid or a leak at a wheel

What each sign usually means

  1. Squeal: pads near the limit
  2. Grind: pads gone — discs at risk
  3. Spongy pedal: air or low fluid
  4. Sinking pedal: fluid leak
  5. Judder: disc run-out
  6. Pulling: stuck caliper or uneven wear

If any of these appear

Have the brakes inspected as soon as possible. Most brake work is inexpensive compared to the cost of an accident — or of replacing discs after a pad grinds down to metal.

Questions about this guide

Pads typically last 30,000–50,000 km, discs longer. Inspect at every tire change and flush the fluid every 2 years.
