What it does

  • Moves the wastegate or variable-vane ring
  • Regulates maximum boost pressure
  • Electronically or vacuum controlled

When it fails

  • Loss of boost and power
  • P0299 underboost or P0234 overboost
  • Boost spikes
  • Stuck or rattling actuator

How to diagnose

  1. Test the actuator with a vacuum/pressure pump
  2. Check the linkage for sticking
  3. Read boost pressure live
  4. Check the boost solenoid

Maintenance

  • Keep the linkage clean and free
  • Replace worn actuators with the correct type
Use the diagnosis order. When a part fails, confirm each hypothesis with measurements before replacing anything — codes and symptoms overlap.
