The steering system transfers the driver’s input to the front wheels through the steering rack (or box), tie rods and steering arms. Power assistance — hydraulic or electric — reduces effort, and the geometry is set so the wheels self-centre.
Suspension connects the wheels to the body through springs, dampers and links. It keeps the tyres in contact with the road, absorbs bumps and controls body movement. Worn bushings, ball joints or dampers cause clunks, vibration, uneven tyre wear and poor handling.
