What you will learn
- Describe what an inspection covers
- Explain emissions/OBD regulations
- Know the technician’s responsibilities
Periodic roadworthiness inspection checks the safety-critical systems — brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres, structure — and increasingly the emissions systems. What is checked and how often depends on the country and vehicle class.
Emissions regulations are why vehicles carry OBD monitors and readiness flags, and why disabling emissions devices is illegal in most markets. As a technician you must work within the law, document what you do, and never help defeat safety or emissions systems.
Key points
- Inspection covers safety and emissions systems.
- OBD readiness exists because of emissions law.
