A scope plots voltage against time. Volts/div sets the vertical scale, time/div the horizontal, and the trigger decides when the trace starts so it appears stable. Choose scales from what you expect: a crank sensor and a CAN bus need very different settings.
Coupling (DC/AC) and probe type matter too. Most automotive signals need DC coupling and a proper ground reference at the ECU or component, not a random chassis bolt.
