Control units are rarely the fault. They need permanent battery power to keep memory, a switched or main-relay feed to operate, several grounds to carry actuator currents, and often a wake-up signal from another module or the ignition switch.
When a module appears dead, prove the supplies and grounds first. A main relay that does not latch, a blown ECU fuse, a corroded ground or a missing wake-up all mimic a failed unit — and all are cheaper to fix.
- Identify the ECU fuses and confirm they are intact and powered.
- Measure permanent and switched power at the ECU connector.
- Voltage-drop the ECU grounds under load where possible.
- Confirm the wake-up/communication enable from the gateway or ignition switch.
- Only then consider the control unit itself.

Never disconnect or reconnect a control unit with the ignition on, and never probe ECU pins carelessly — a short can destroy the unit.
