What you will learn

  • Explain why modules share data
  • Describe the role of a gateway
  • Recognise symptoms of a communication fault

Modern vehicles do not measure and act in isolation. The engine, ABS, body and transmission controllers exchange data continuously so that, for example, the gearbox knows engine load and the dashboard knows vehicle speed without a dedicated wire for each value.

A gateway module routes messages between different networks and protocols. That is why a generic scan tool sometimes cannot reach body or chassis modules: they live behind the gateway on a different bus.

Typical U-codes (U0100, U0121) mean one module stopped hearing another. The cause may be the module, its power/ground, or the bus between them.

Key points

  • Shared data means one fault can affect many systems.
  • The gateway is the router — suspect it when whole networks vanish.
  • Check power, ground and bus before condemning a module.

Key points

  • Modules exchange data, not just signals
  • A gateway routes messages between networks
  • One silent module can disable several functions
All values shown are training examples. Real thresholds depend on the manufacturer, engine, temperature and system — always confirm with the vehicle service documentation.
