A relay lets a small switch control a large current. The coil is energised by the control circuit and pulls the contacts closed. Because the two sides are electrically separate, a relay can click perfectly and still fail to pass current — the classic “it clicks but nothing happens”.
Test in three steps: confirm the coil receives voltage and a ground, measure coil resistance where accessible, then measure the voltage drop across the closed contacts while the load runs.
- Identify the relay and read its pin numbers from the case or the wiring diagram.
- With the relay commanded on, confirm voltage across the coil terminals.
- Swap the relay with an identical one to confirm the circuit.
- Measure voltage drop across the closed contacts under load (should be very small).
