The vehicle body and engine are electrical conductors, so most circuits use a local ground to return current to the battery. That saves weight but means one corroded ground point can affect several unrelated systems at once.

A ground can be “present” for continuity yet unable to carry current. The only honest test is a voltage drop measured while the circuit operates: the meter is placed between the load ground and the battery negative, and any significant reading means resistance.

Classic examples: dim lights that brighten when another load is switched on, slow wipers, or an engine that cranks slowly but starts instantly with a jump lead to the block.
