A common-rail system pressurises fuel in one place and distributes it to all injectors. Diagnosis starts with the pressure data: requested and actual rail pressure under idle, load and cranking. If actual never reaches requested, the cause is low supply, a faulty pressure control valve or excessive leakage.
During cranking the rail must build pressure quickly; slow build-up explains a hard start long before the engine runs. Excess injector return flow is a classic cause of low rail pressure on an otherwise healthy pump.
