The Five-Step Diagnostic Process
A disciplined process from customer complaint to confirmed repair — the difference between a technician and a parts-changer.

What you will learn
- Apply a five-step diagnostic process
- Document evidence
- Verify the repair
- Verify the customer complaint and note the exact conditions.
- Gather evidence: codes, freeze frame, live data and physical checks.
- Form a hypothesis and a ranked test plan.
- Test to confirm or eliminate the cause — measure, do not guess.
- Repair, then verify against the original complaint and re-run monitors.
The process is deliberately boring. It stops the two most expensive habits in a workshop: replacing parts because they are “likely”, and declaring a repair done because the light went out.
Documentation is part of the method. Recording measured values lets you compare before and after, protects you with the customer and makes a comeback a facts-based conversation rather than an argument.
