Always trust the owner manual

Oil quantity, viscosity and API/ACEA specification must come from the vehicle documentation. Common passenger cars use between 3 and 6 litres; engines with larger oil pans or turbochargers use more.

• Choose the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer (e.g. 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40)
• Respect the API (gasoline) or ACEA (European) specification
• Replace the oil filter at every change
• Check the drain plug torque — most are 25–40 Nm
• Run the engine 1 minute after filling, check level, top up

Interval advice

Modern cars commonly recommend 10,000–15,000 km or 1 year, whichever comes first. Severe driving (short trips, heavy traffic, dust, towing) calls for more frequent changes. The calculator lets you plan this.
