Before winter
- Test the battery — cold cuts its output by up to 40%
- Check the coolant mixture (50/50 protects to about −35 °C)
- Fit winter tires if temperatures regularly fall below 7 °C
- Check wiper blades and top up winter screen wash
- Verify the heater and demister work
- Check the anti-freeze in the washer fluid
In the car
- Ice scraper and de-icer
- Torch, gloves and a blanket
- Jump leads or a booster pack
- Phone charger and a bottle of water
On the road
Clear all snow and ice before driving — snow on the roof is a hazard and can be illegal. Reduce speed, increase following distance, and use winter tires for real grip.
Questions about this guide
Below about 7 °C, summer rubber hardens and loses grip. If you face regular ice or snow, winter tires are the single best safety upgrade.
