What it does
- Cools compressed intake air
- Cooler air is denser — more oxygen per volume
- Sits in the front bumper or on top of the engine
When it fails
- Loss of boost and power
- Oil in the intercooler (turbo leak)
- P0299 underboost code
- Visible damage or leaks
How to diagnose
- Pressure-test the intercooler and pipes
- Look for oil traces indicating turbo seal wear
- Check the cooler fins for blockage
Maintenance
- Replace cracked pipes and worn clamps
- Clean the fins of debris
- Fix turbo leaks before they soak the intercooler
Use the diagnosis order. When a part fails, confirm each hypothesis with measurements before replacing anything — codes and symptoms overlap.
